The Short Version

Buy them if you want to hear your surroundings while you listen, and you want earbuds that stay put without an ear hook. Running, cycling, office work and walking in traffic are where open-ear earbuds make sense.

Buy them if you wear glasses. A clip sits on the edge of the ear and leaves the top free, so it does not compete with glasses arms the way ear hooks can.

Do not buy them for a noisy commute or a flight. Open-ear means no isolation at all. On a train the outside noise wins, and you will turn the volume up to compensate.

How the Clip-On Design Works

Each earbud wraps around the edge of the ear, with the speaker resting just outside the ear canal. A flexible nickel-titanium band joins the two halves and holds the earbud in place by gentle pressure, with a silicone grip so it does not slide. Each earbud weighs about 6.5g.

The left and right earbuds are interchangeable. Either one fits either ear, so there is no fumbling for the right one, and if you use a single earbud you can wear it on whichever side you prefer.

Compared with an ear hook, a clip is smaller, easier to put on with one hand, and sits more discreetly. An ear hook such as the Shokz OpenFit 2 spreads its weight over the top of the ear, which some people find more secure for hard running. Which feels better is personal, and it is worth knowing that the two designs exist before choosing.

What You Get

Up to 10 hours per charge, and 40 hours with the case. A 10-minute charge gives about 2 hours. As always, these are best-case figures.

Wireless charging. The case charges on a Qi pad as well as over USB-C, which is uncommon at this price. Quick charging works only over the cable.

IP54 water and dust resistance. That covers sweat and rain, not swimming. For the pool, Shokz makes the OpenSwim Pro.

Multipoint, so the earbuds stay connected to a phone and a laptop at once.

The Shokz app, with EQ modes, customisable touch controls and a find-my-earbuds feature.

Dolby Audio and Shokz's DirectPitch, which aims the sound towards the ear canal to reduce what leaks out to the people around you.

What Open-Ear Costs You

Isolation. There is none, by design. In a quiet room or outdoors that is the point; in a loud place it means the music loses.

Bass in noisy places. Open-ear speakers cannot seal the ear, and bass is the first thing a noisy environment drowns out. Shokz's Bassphere processing helps, and at moderate volume in quieter settings the sound is full enough, but these will never have the weight of sealed earbuds on a bus.

Some sound leakage. DirectPitch reduces it, but at high volume in a silent office the person next to you may hear something. Keep the volume moderate in quiet shared spaces.

Noise cancelling. Not available, and not possible in an open design.

OpenDots ONE or the Alternatives?

Shokz OpenFit 2. The ear-hook alternative from the same company. Choose the hook if you want the most secure fit for intense training, the clip if you want something smaller and glasses-friendly.

Soundcore AeroFit 2. A cheaper ear-hook design. If open-ear appeals but the budget is firm, it is the obvious place to start; our AeroFit 2 vs OpenFit 2 comparison covers how the cheaper option holds up.

Bose Ultra Open Earbuds. The other well-known clip-on, and usually considerably more expensive. Bose adds its own spatial audio processing; the OpenDots ONE match it on the core idea for much less.

Bone conduction. If you want your ears entirely uncovered, our best bone conduction headphones guide covers designs that sit in front of the ear instead.

FAQ

Are the Shokz OpenDots ONE good for running? Yes. The clip holds firmly, the IP54 rating handles sweat, and open-ear lets you hear traffic. Some runners prefer an ear hook for the hardest sessions.

Do the OpenDots ONE work with glasses? Yes. The clip sits on the edge of the ear and leaves the top free for glasses arms, which is one of the main advantages over ear-hook designs.

Do they have noise cancelling? No. They are open-ear, so nothing blocks outside sound.

How long does the battery last? Up to 10 hours per charge and 40 hours with the case, by Shokz's figures. A 10-minute charge gives about 2 hours.

Can you swim with them? No. IP54 covers sweat and rain. Shokz's OpenSwim Pro is the swimming option.

Do people around you hear your music? At moderate volume, little. At high volume in a quiet room, some sound escapes, as with any open-ear earbud.

The Verdict

Our score: 8.0/10. The OpenDots ONE do what open-ear earbuds are for, in a smaller and more discreet form than the usual ear hook: they stay put, leave you aware of your surroundings, work with glasses, and add wireless charging, multipoint and a capable app.

They are the wrong tool for anyone who wants quiet. For runners, cyclists, office workers and anyone who needs to hear the world while they listen, they are one of the most practical designs available.
