Why Android Changes the Answer

Android supports LDAC and LHDC. Apple devices support neither.

That is the entire basis for a platform-specific list, and it is worth understanding before you spend. Both are hi-res Bluetooth codecs that carry more data than the standard SBC or AAC, and both need support on the phone and in the earbuds to do anything. Android has carried LDAC since Google adopted it into the operating system; iPhones have not.

The honest limits. A better codec only helps if the source material justifies it. Streaming Spotify or watching YouTube gives the codec very little extra to work with, and the difference will be somewhere between subtle and imaginary. Lossless files, or a hi-res tier from a service that offers one, are where it becomes audible.

So treat codec support as worth paying a small premium for and not worth paying a large one. That principle drives the order below.

The second Android-specific trap is ecosystem lock. Some of the best earbuds on Android are best on one manufacturer's Android. Samsung's are the clearest case, and the listing will not tell you which features you lose on a Pixel or a OnePlus.

Nothing Ear Wireless Earbuds Bluetooth

The pick for most Android users, because it is the least expensive way to get both hi-res codecs.

LDAC and LHDC 5.0 are both here, alongside up to 45dB of hybrid cancellation, an 11mm driver with a bass boost, six microphones for calls and around 40.5 hours of total playtime. Nothing's transparent design is either the reason you want them or beside the point.

What you give up against the Samsung: some refinement, and a slightly shorter quoted battery than its own cheaper sibling. Our Nothing Ear vs Nothing Ear (a) comparison covers that oddity in detail — on iPhone the cheaper model wins, and here it does not.

Samsung Galaxy Buds 3 Pro AI True Wireless Bluetooth Earbuds

The best earbuds here, with a condition attached that decides whether you should buy them.

Cancellation, comfort and call quality are all a clear step above the rest of this list, and the fit was redesigned to sit more securely than earlier Galaxy Buds. If you own a recent Galaxy phone, this is the pick and the extra money is doing real work.

If you do not own a Samsung phone, buy something else. The seamless codec, the automatic switching between Samsung devices and several of the assistant features are tied to Samsung's own ecosystem. On a Pixel or a OnePlus you are paying flagship money for a portion of the product.

Nothing Ear (a) Wireless Earbuds

The value pick, and close enough to the leader that most people would not notice the gap.

The same 45dB cancellation figure, a longer quoted battery at 42.5 hours, six microphones and the same app behind it — for meaningfully less money. What it lacks is the pair of hi-res codecs, which is the one thing this list is organised around.

Buy it if you stream compressed audio, which is most people most of the time. The codec advantage above is real and it is not worth eighteen dollars to someone who only listens to Spotify.

JBL Tune Flex - True Wireless Noise Cancelling Earbuds

The pick if you have never settled on whether sealed earbuds suit you.

It ships with both sealed tips and open ones, so the same purchase covers two quite different fits. That is unusual and genuinely useful: sealed gives better cancellation and bass, open leaves you aware of traffic and colleagues, and most people have a strong preference once they try both.

Cancellation is competent rather than class-leading, and there is no hi-res codec. Treat it as a fit experiment with decent earbuds attached.

Soundcore P31i by Anker

The pick for people who move between quiet and loud places during a day.

Its cancellation adapts in real time rather than holding one level, which suits a commute that starts in a quiet street and ends on a train. Anker's app is among the better ones at this price, and the sound is adjustable enough to suit most tastes.

Note that this model has become noticeably more expensive than it was, which puts it against the two above rather than below them. At its current price it is a reasonable choice rather than an obvious one — check the figure on the day.

How to Choose Earbuds for Android

Do you own a Samsung Galaxy phone? Then the Galaxy Buds 3 Pro moves to the top of this list. If not, it drops well down it.

Do you listen to lossless or hi-res audio? If yes, LDAC or LHDC support is worth paying for and only the Nothing Ear here has both. If you cannot remember the last lossless file you played, ignore codecs entirely.

Sealed or open fit? If you have never decided, the JBL ships with both and lets you find out.

How much should you spend? Under a hundred dollars covers everything most people need on Android — see best wireless earbuds under $100. Above that you are buying ecosystem features or refinement.

Switching from iPhone? The calculation genuinely changes, and our AirPods 4 vs AirPods Pro 3 comparison explains what stays behind when you leave.

FAQ

Do AirPods work with Android? They connect and play audio, but most of what makes them worth buying — automatic switching, spatial audio features, the setup experience — needs an Apple device. On Android there are better options at every price.

What is LDAC and do I need it? A hi-res Bluetooth codec that Android supports and Apple does not. It carries more data than standard codecs, which helps with lossless or hi-res sources and does very little for compressed streaming.

Which earbuds are best for Samsung phones specifically? The Galaxy Buds 3 Pro, because its seamless codec and automatic device switching are built around Samsung's ecosystem. On other Android phones that advantage disappears.

Do I need to spend more than $100 on Android? No. The picks between roughly sixty and eighty dollars here cover cancellation, battery and call quality perfectly well. Spending more buys refinement or ecosystem integration, not a different experience.

Which of these has the best battery life? The Nothing Ear (a), at around 42.5 hours in total — slightly ahead of its more expensive sibling, which is one of the odder facts in this category.

Will these work if I switch to iPhone later? All of them will pair and play. You would lose the hi-res codec support, which on the Nothing Ear is the main reason to choose it over its cheaper sibling.

Verdict

For most Android users the Nothing Ear is the right buy. It is the cheapest route to both LDAC and LHDC, the cancellation is competitive, and it costs a fraction of the flagship option.

The Galaxy Buds 3 Pro is the better product in absolute terms and the right choice only if there is a Galaxy phone in your pocket. That condition matters more than any specification on this page, and no listing will warn you about it.

If codecs mean nothing to you — and for most listening they genuinely do not — the Nothing Ear (a) does almost everything its dearer sibling does for less money, with a slightly longer battery into the bargain.
