The Short Version

The Battery Idea

Two batteries, one in the headset and one charging in the base station.

When the headset warns you, you pull the spent cell out of the earcup, drop in the charged one, and keep playing. The swap takes seconds and the dock refills the other while you go.

This is a genuinely different answer to the problem everyone else solves with capacity. An eighty-hour headset still eventually needs plugging in, usually at the worst moment. This one converts charging from an interruption into something that happens beside you, permanently, without your involvement.

The catch is that the base station is the product. It is a desk device with an OLED screen and two USB inputs, and the headset's best features run through it. Take the headset somewhere else and you have a good wireless headset with one battery and no dock — which is a fine thing, but not what you paid for.

What Else the Base Station Does

Two consoles connected at once, switched with a button. Xbox and PC, or PC and PlayStation, without crawling behind a desk. For anyone who plays on more than one machine this is the second-best reason to own it.

Two audio streams mixed simultaneously. Low-latency 2.4GHz to the game and Bluetooth to a phone at the same time — a call or a Discord channel layered over game audio rather than replacing it.

The screen is where you actually change settings, rather than in software you have to alt-tab into.

Active Noise Cancellation, In a Gaming Headset

Gaming headsets normally rely on closed earcups and clamping force. This adds a four-microphone hybrid cancellation system and a transparency mode alongside it.

Treat the cancellation as good rather than class-leading. Dedicated travel headphones from Sony and Bose do this better, because it is their entire purpose. What matters here is that it exists at all: a shared house or an office is a real gaming problem, and most headsets in this bracket ignore it completely.

The Version Question, Again

SteelSeries sells this under two listings, and the one labelled for Xbox is the wider of the two.

The Xbox listing states Xbox, PC, PS5, PS4, Switch and mobile. The other states everything except Xbox. At the time of writing the narrower one is out of stock and the wider one is not, so the choice makes itself — but the pattern is worth naming, because it is the third time this month we have found it on a gaming headset.

What The Money Does Not Buy

Not portability. The dock does not travel, and without it this is an ordinary — if very good — wireless headset.

Not immediate delivery, currently. Roughly a week and a half by Amazon's own estimate, which matters if you are buying for a specific weekend.

Not the best pure audio at the price. Two hundred and fifty dollars buys serious music headphones. This is tuned for games and its spatial processing does music no favours.

Not a light headset. This is a substantial piece of hardware and it feels like one over a long session.

Who Should Buy Something Else

Anyone who plays mostly on a couch or on the move. The base station is the point, and it lives on a desk. Our best wireless gaming headset page has options that travel better.

Anyone for whom a hundred dollars matters more than a second battery. The Stealth 700 Gen 3 covers the same ground with one battery and a long runtime.

The Verdict

The most complete gaming headset system we have looked at, and a genuine engineering idea rather than a specification arms race.

Removing the charging question entirely is worth more in daily use than any quoted runtime, and the dual-console switching is the kind of feature you stop noticing precisely because it works. Cancellation, a good microphone and real software round it out.

The price is honest about what it is. You are buying a desk system, not a headset, and if you do not play at a desk you are paying for hardware you will leave in a drawer. If you do, this is the one that stops asking anything of you.
