The Short Version
Buy them on sale if you want dependable noise-cancelling earbuds from a major brand. The cancelling, the ambient modes, the battery and the app are all competent, and JBL's support and warranty are a known quantity.
Do not pay full list price. At list price the Tune Buds face rivals that add adaptive cancelling, hi-res codecs or more microphones. Their case rests on the discount.
Expect JBL's tuning. The bass is emphasised by design. The app's equaliser can pull it back, and you will probably want to.
What You Get
Active noise cancelling with Smart Ambient. Cancelling handles steady noise such as engine hum and air conditioning; Ambient Aware lets outside sound in when you need to hear traffic or an announcement, and TalkThru lowers the music so you can hold a conversation without taking the buds out. The cancelling is fixed rather than adaptive — you choose the mode, and the earbuds do not adjust themselves to your surroundings.
Four microphones for calls, with VoiceAware. Two microphones per earbud handle voice pickup, and VoiceAware lets you hear your own voice during a call so you do not end up talking too loudly. That is a real advantage over the cheapest earbuds, which usually have one microphone per side.
Bluetooth 5.3 with LE Audio support. The practical benefit today is that either earbud can be used on its own. LE Audio features beyond that depend on your phone supporting them, and many do not yet.
The JBL Headphones app. It controls the cancelling and ambient modes and has an equaliser, which matters here more than on most earbuds, for the reason below.
Battery
Up to 10 hours per charge with cancelling on, and 40 hours including the case. With cancelling off, 12 and 48.
JBL publishes both figures, which not every brand does. As always, treat them as ceilings: louder listening lands lower. Even so, 10 hours with cancelling running covers a long travel day, and a 15-minute charge gives about 4 hours of playback.
The Sound
JBL calls it Pure Bass, and it is bass-forward by design. The 10mm drivers push low frequencies harder than a neutral tuning would, which suits pop, hip-hop and electronic music and makes podcasts sound a little thick.
The equaliser fixes it. A few minutes in the app turns the bass down to taste, and once that is done the Tune Buds sound clean and balanced for the price. Without the app you are listening to JBL's preference rather than yours.
What You Give Up
Adaptive cancelling. The Tune Buds use fixed cancelling. Several cheaper rivals, including the Soundcore P31i, adjust themselves to the room.
Hi-res codecs. There is no LDAC, so Android users with hi-res files get no benefit from them here.
Wireless charging. The case charges over USB-C only.
Top-tier cancelling. Like every earbud at this price, the Tune Buds dull steady noise well and do little against voices.
Tune Buds or Tune Buds 2?
JBL has since released the Tune Buds 2, which keep the same battery figures and add three things: adaptive cancelling, six microphones instead of four, and JBL Spatial Sound. On paper that is a meaningful upgrade, particularly for calls in wind and noise.
Compare the two on the day you buy. The newer model has a much smaller owner base so far. If calls outdoors matter to you, or the price gap is small, the Tune Buds 2 are the better buy; if you mostly listen on a commute and the originals are clearly cheaper, they do the core job.

Soundcore P31i. Usually cheaper, with adaptive cancelling, LDAC and six call microphones. It is the stronger specification; the JBL is the better-known brand.
