Decide How You Want to Wear and Connect Them

The Sony WH-CH520 is the lower-cost starting point here. The JBL Tune 720BT needs a specific reason to spend more. Its over-ear shape, included listening cable and longer published battery maximum are the clearest reasons to consider it. Sony already provides multipoint and app EQ, so those shared features alone do not justify the upgrade.

This comparison uses manufacturer documentation and verified new-condition US offers. The editorial scores reflect the feature sets and buying compromises; they do not establish a measured winner for sound, calls or comfort. Our linked versions are JBL Black and Sony Blue. Compare the exact model, condition and current total when shopping.

These are the manufacturers' own battery claims, rather than results under one shared test. See JBL's specification sheet, Sony's product details and Sony's charging instructions.

JBL Tune 720BT - Wireless Over-Ear Headphones

Choose the Tune 720BT when its shape or listening cable solves a problem. JBL documents an over-ear design, folding construction, app EQ and multipoint. It also includes a detachable audio cable and describes using it when the battery is flat. That is a concrete advantage if you use a source with a suitable audio output. JBL Tune 720BT documentation.

For a bag containing a laptop, handheld player or other audio source, check the available socket before assigning value to the cable. A phone or computer without a compatible output may need an adapter. Treat the supplied cable as a listening option; it does not establish microphone compatibility with your particular device.

The drawback is paying more for functions you may not need. If Bluetooth-only listening and Sony's on-ear fit already work for you, JBL's extra capability may sit unused. Its higher editorial score is not a recommendation to spend more regardless of your routine.

Sony WH-CH520 Wireless Headphones

Choose the WH-CH520 when you are happy with an on-ear design and want to keep the current outlay lower. Sony lists app EQ, physical buttons and up to 50 hours of playback. Its two-device connection means choosing the cheaper option does not require giving up a phone-and-laptop setup. Sony product documentation.

The shape is the buying condition: the pads sit on your ears. Try them with glasses, your normal seated posture and a session representative of how you listen. We cannot infer comfortable hours of use from the format or the manufacturer's description.

There is also a charging limitation worth knowing before a meeting. Sony says music playback and Bluetooth operations are unavailable while the headset is connected to an outlet or computer for charging. Plugging its USB-C cable into your laptop does not turn that charging connection into a listening workaround. Sony charging guide.

Fit Comes Before the Battery Number

An over-ear label describes the intended arrangement; it does not guarantee that a particular cup will surround your ears without contact. Check how the JBL pads sit, whether the headband stays in place and whether the cups press against your glasses.

For Sony, check whether pressure on the ears stays acceptable through your usual session. Avoid assuming that a lighter or smaller-looking design must be more comfortable. Equally, do not assume the JBL will suit you merely because it is over-ear.

The useful comparison is a normal listening block, including talking and moving your head. If you keep repositioning either model, that matters more than the difference between two large battery headlines. Buy with enough return-window time to establish whether the shape works for you.

Multipoint Is Shared, but Switching Still Needs Setup

JBL describes moving from media on one Bluetooth device to a call on another. Sony's help guide tells you to pair both devices and enable Connect to 2 devices simultaneously in the companion app. For Sony media switching, stop the first source before starting the second. JBL connection overview, Sony multipoint instructions.

Test the sequence you actually use: laptop playback, an incoming phone call, then a return to the laptop. Check input and output selections inside your meeting software. Two active connections do not promise that both audio streams will mix together.

If this is your main buying reason, our multipoint headphones guide compares additional options. There is little reason to pay more solely for a feature both of these models already support.

Long Battery Life Does Not Provide ANC

Neither is the pair to choose for active noise cancellation. JBL Support explicitly confirms the 720BT lacks ANC in its model-specific answer. Sony's WH-CH520 feature FAQ also does not list active cancellation for this model.

How much surrounding sound the fit reduces still needs a personal check. This comparison does not measure passive isolation, and the JBL's larger cups should not be treated as a promise of quiet on a train or plane.

If cancellation is a requirement, use our noise-cancelling headphones under $100 guide before choosing between these two. A longer playback claim does not address that need.

Calls and Sound Need Separate Judgments

Both brands provide sound customization, but an EQ menu cannot tell us which pair you will enjoy more. Begin with familiar recordings at a comfortable volume and adjust only what you want to change. Brand tuning names are not evidence of a comparative sound result.

For calls, record your voice in the application and location you normally use. Listen for understandable speech and distracting background sound. JBL's documented Voice Aware feature lets you hear your own voice while talking; that is different from proving microphone quality at the other end. JBL call features.

FAQ

Is JBL worth the higher current price?

It can be if you prefer its fit, need the included audio cable or value the longer claimed playback. If none applies, Sony's lower current offer is the more economical starting point.

Can Sony play while charging over USB-C?

No. Sony's model-specific charging guide says playback is unavailable while connected for charging. Plan a charging break rather than relying on that connection for audio.

Do I need JBL for two-device connectivity?

No. Both support multipoint. Finish the setup and check switching with your own phone and laptop.

Verdict

Start with Sony WH-CH520 for the lower current cost if on-ear Bluetooth listening suits you. Consider JBL Tune 720BT when its over-ear shape and cable fallback justify spending more. Decide on fit and source compatibility first, then give the battery claims the weight they deserve in your actual routine.
