8.5Our Score

Comfort is King: Comfort’s in the Cloud III’s DNA. Built for gamers who can’t have an uncomfortable headset ruin the flow of their full-combo, disrupt their speedrun, or knocking them out of the zone. Audio Tuned for Your Entertainment: Angled 53mm drivers have been tuned by HyperX audio engineers to provide the optimal listening experience that accents the dynamic sounds of gaming. Upgraded Microphone for Clarity and Accuracy: Captures high-quality audio for clear voice chat and calls. The mic is noise-cancelling and features a built-in mesh filter to omit disruptive sounds and LED mic mute indicator lets you know when you’re muted. Durability, for the Toughest of Battles: The headset is flexible and features an aluminum frame so it’s resilient against travel, accidents, mishaps, and your ‘level-headed’ reactions to losses and defeat screens. DTS Headphone:X Spatial Audio: A lifetime activation of DTS Spatial Audio will help amp up your audio advantage and immersion with its precise sound localization and virtual 3D sound stage.

It Is Wired, Deliberately

There is no wireless option here, and that is the point. The Cloud III ships with USB-C, USB-A and 3.5 mm connections, and every one of them is a cable.

What that buys is worth being clear about. No latency to manage, no battery to run flat mid-match, no pairing, and the 3.5 mm connection means it works on a console controller, a phone, a Switch in handheld mode, or a laptop with equal indifference. Three plugs cover essentially every device a person owns.

What it costs is obvious: you are tethered. For desk gaming that is a non-issue; for anything where you get up and move, it is the wrong headset.

Comfort Is the Actual Product

HyperX leads its own marketing with comfort rather than sound, and for once that ordering is honest. Memory foam cushions and a well-judged clamping force are why these get recommended to people who play for whole evenings.

This matters more than it sounds. Gaming headsets are worn far longer than music headphones, and the ones people abandon are almost never abandoned because of sound quality — they are abandoned because something starts to hurt at hour three.

The frame is aluminium, not plastic. At this price that is unusual, and it addresses the failure mode that ends most gaming headsets: the hinge or the headband snapping. Expect this one to survive being thrown in a bag.

The Microphone

A 10 mm noise-cancelling microphone with a mesh filter and an LED mute indicator.

The mute light sounds trivial and is the feature you will use most — knowing at a glance whether you are live removes the single most common embarrassment in voice chat.

Microphone quality is where cheap gaming headsets fail hardest, and this is comfortably above that line. It is not a standalone microphone and will not replace one for streaming, but for team communication and calls it is clear and unfussy.

Sound, and the Spatial Audio

Angled 53 mm drivers, tuned for games rather than for accuracy. Positional cues are easy to place, explosions have weight, and dialogue stays intelligible under effects.

It is not a neutral headphone and does not try to be. For music it is enjoyable rather than revealing — if you want detail, our best wired headphones guide covers what the same money buys in that direction.

DTS Headphone:X spatial audio is included with a lifetime activation. Treat virtual surround as a preference rather than an upgrade: some people place sounds better with it on, others find it hollows out the mix. It costs nothing to try both.

Who Should Buy It

You game at a desk for long sessions: yes. Comfort and the aluminium frame are the reasons, and they are the right reasons.

You play across several devices: yes. USB-C, USB-A and 3.5 mm covers PC, PS5, Xbox, Switch and a phone without adapters.

You want wireless: no. This is a wired headset by design — see best wireless gaming headset.

You stream: partly. The microphone is good for a headset and still short of a dedicated one.

You want cancellation for a noisy room: no. The mic cancels noise for your listeners; the headset does not cancel noise for you.

You want to spend less: best gaming headset under $50 covers the tier below, where build quality is the first thing to go.

FAQ

Is the HyperX Cloud III wired or wireless? Wired, with USB-C, USB-A and 3.5 mm options. HyperX sells wireless models separately.

Does it work with PS5, Xbox and Switch? Yes. The 3.5 mm connection covers consoles and handheld play; USB handles PC.

Is the microphone good enough for streaming? Good for a headset microphone and clearly above budget headsets, but a standalone microphone is still better if streaming is the main use.

Does it have noise cancelling? The microphone is noise-cancelling for the people listening to you. The headset itself has no active cancellation for you — isolation is passive only.

Is it comfortable for long sessions? This is its strongest quality. Memory foam and moderate clamp make it one of the easier headsets to wear for a full evening.

What is DTS Headphone:X? Virtual surround, included with a lifetime activation. Worth trying in both states — it suits some people and not others.

Verdict

Our score: 8.5/10. The Cloud III does the two things that decide whether a gaming headset gets used: it stays comfortable for hours, and it survives being handled. The aluminium frame at this price is genuinely uncommon, and the microphone with its mute indicator is well above what the category usually offers.

Its one deliberate limitation is that it is wired. For a desk that is an advantage — no latency, no battery, three connections covering every device you own. For anything mobile it is the wrong choice, and no amount of comfort changes that.

If you play at a desk and want a headset you will still be using in three years, this is the straightforward answer.
