Which CMF Pair Should You Buy?

Start with Buds 2a if you want affordable ANC earbuds for short listening sessions and a phone-and-laptop routine. The more expensive Buds Pro 2 becomes worth considering when you would use its case controller, want LDAC on a compatible source, or need its longer published AAC runtime.

Both were available as new-condition US offers at our price check. The dated links below show those offers; compare the current checkout totals before deciding how much the extra features are worth.

This comparison evaluates manufacturer documentation and buying tradeoffs. The 8.1 and 8.0 editorial scores reflect the respective feature sets and limitations, rather than measured differences in sound or ANC. These are the Buds 2a and Buds Pro 2, so check the complete names rather than substituting Buds 2 or Buds 2 Plus.

Nothing's model-specific documentation lists the Buds 2a codecs and Buds Pro 2 codecs. The battery claims come from its separate 2a battery table and Pro 2 battery table.

CMF Buds Pro 2 Wireless Earbuds

Buy Pro 2 for a feature you can picture using. The most distinctive is the Smart Dial on the charging case. Nothing says it has no function initially: assign its controls in Nothing X first. Options include volume, playback, track changes, noise modes and call functions. Official dial instructions.

Beside a keyboard, the case can give you a convenient place to reach for a control. Inside a zipped bag, that same feature may save little effort. Before paying more, decide where the case will sit during your ordinary listening session.

The other reasons to consider Pro 2 are its longer claimed AAC playback and optional LDAC. Neither is an unconditional upgrade: battery expectations depend on settings, and a codec requires support from your source device. Our Buds Pro 2 review covers the model in more detail.

CMF Buds 2a Wireless Earbuds

Choose 2a when its shared basics cover the job. Nothing documents ANC on the Buds 2a product page and confirms two simultaneous classic Bluetooth device connections in its dual-connection guidance. App management is limited to one device at a time.

That makes it worth considering for a desk routine without paying for a case controller or LDAC. Its limitation is the shorter per-charge listening claim. A day split into short sessions is a different use case from several hours of continuous cancellation.

The 2a also lacks wireless charging, as confirmed in Nothing's charging FAQ. Decide whether a cable is an acceptable habit. For a fuller look at its compromises, read the Buds 2a review.

Battery: Pro 2 Wins the AAC Claim, Then LDAC Changes It

The table compares the same named codec and noise modes. Nothing describes AAC testing at 50% volume and 25°C; actual use can differ. On those published figures, Pro 2 offers more time between case breaks.

That advantage changes if you enable LDAC. Nothing lists Pro 2 at up to 6.5 hours with LDAC and ANC off, falling to 4.3 hours with ANC or Transparency on. The latter is below the 2a's five-hour AAC claim. This is a settings tradeoff, rather than evidence that the cheaper model has better battery performance under identical conditions. Pro 2 battery documentation.

Plan around the longest session you need to finish. Case totals require removing the earbuds to recharge, and music figures should not be treated as talk-time promises. Leave a margin below the advertised maximum if running out mid-session would be disruptive.

LDAC and Two Devices: Choose Your Priority

For LDAC, Nothing requires a compatible phone and enabling High-Quality Audio in Nothing X. It says iOS does not support LDAC, and recommends disabling dual connection when choosing a higher LDAC bitrate to preserve bandwidth. This is a recommendation for that setup, rather than a claim that every LDAC setting always prevents two connections. Nothing's LDAC instructions.

For a phone-and-laptop workday, begin with dual connection behaving as you need. For a dedicated session on one compatible source, explore the codec option separately. An iPhone buyer should weigh the dial, AAC runtime and fit more heavily than LDAC support.

Nothing's Pro 2 instructions describe calls taking priority over music from another phone, while starting music on the second phone does not automatically switch the audio channel. That is switching logic, rather than two streams being mixed. Official two-phone playback rules.

Check the actual handoff with your computer and meeting app during the return period. Our multipoint earbuds guide provides alternatives if that workflow is your main priority.

What the Upgrade Cannot Settle on Paper

Both models advertise ANC, but this comparison cannot establish which removes more of the noise in your room. Pro 2's product specifications also list dual drivers; the hardware count does not prove that you will prefer its sound.

Try the supplied tips, talk and move your head, then check whether the seal stays comfortable. Evaluate calls through your normal application in a typical location. A model that needs frequent repositioning is a poor match regardless of the name on its box.

If those basics work equally well, the upgrade decision becomes clearer: choose the functions you use often enough to justify the current price difference. Buying Pro 2 solely because “Pro” sounds better leaves the most important questions unanswered.

FAQ

Do I need Pro 2 to connect to two devices?

No. Buds 2a also supports dual connection. Test the handoff you need instead of assuming that paying more is necessary for the feature.

Will Pro 2 always last longer?

Its documented AAC music maxima are longer. With LDAC and ANC enabled, its claim falls to 4.3 hours, so compare your intended settings.

Does the case dial work immediately?

Nothing says it needs configuration in Nothing X. Set its functions before deciding whether the controls suit your routine.

Verdict

Choose Buds 2a for the lower current cost when ANC and two-device use are enough. Choose Buds Pro 2 for an accessible case dial, longer claimed AAC sessions or LDAC on a compatible device. Give each extra a real job in your day before paying for it, and make fit and call checks part of the buying decision.
